Uh oh, its another long one! Its sad to come to work and see that more crime has happened in your area, but its part of the job you pay me for. I work hard to reduce our crime and even harder to try and bring us together as neighborhoods, communities and partners. What is more frustrating is the quick judgement and lack of tolerance that I see in some of the posts here. Please try and remember that there may be another side to the story. A quick Facebook post can easily be taken out of context, misunderstood, and most often, simply not convey the entire situation. Not everyone is good with the written word, especially when they are fighting the adrenaline of trying to describe a crime in progress. People post about a real problem in their world, only to have others put them down for it. You may feel that its not a problem (i.e kids getting high in a car) but to the poster it may be very serious (i.e lost their child to a DUI car crash). The party next door at 11pm? its just kids, let them have fun! Yes, perhaps it is, but perhaps the bass is knocking stuff off your shelves, your 2 year old is screaming, and you have to get up for work at 4 AM. There are many different shades to some of these incidents. I applaud those of you that are trying to help your neighborhoods. Please keep it up, but also try to throw in details to help others understand. For those with an opposing opinion (no, a different opinion isnt an attack), please tread lightly. These are your neighbors! You can disagree without being a jerk about it. As far as the crime activity and police response, Ill post the West Hills year to date stats (current as of last week) below this post. A1 is my area and is north of LA River (the wash). A43 is SLO Sabras area and is South of LA river. This ability to quickly share crime information has brought light to the fact that we have crime in the area. We always have, and currently it is less. While some areas spike (Grand Theft Auto- south of the river + 83%) please take a look at the overall numbers. If you were to pull the stats of the years past, you would find that they continually rise and that things were significantly worse years ago. It seems different when you have so many posts of bad things happening, but the reality is, things are better (not good, but increasingly better). To close up, Id like to touch on police response. There are a lot of factors involved here and the first is triage. When you go to the emergency room you might be the first in line and you might be last with anyone else walking in having the potential to bump you back. When you call in to dispatch, what you tell the dispatcher determines the priority of the call. Our patrol officers can frequently have 5 calls in their stack and the most serious always comes first. That 5th call is going to have to wait a while. That said, if something gets worse in the nature of your call for service, PLEASE call back and update it. We like to catch the bad guy. Its fun and gives us warm fuzzies to know that we caught them and put them away (at least for the night). TL;DR (internet speak for too long; didnt read) Crime is still down, try not to judge, and please try to be good to each other.
