***Under 9s – Result – 6/7/13*** Whitburn & Cleadon Diablo – 2 SR Dons FC – 0 Dithering Dons made to pay. After last weeks harsh and unfair defeat to Durham & Cestria, it was hoped the Dons could build on the good performance. With a bright start from the Dons, it looked like the team were ready to bounce back. Zak Gregory almost opened the Dons account with a long range pile-driver, which was tipped over the bar by the Whitburn keeper. Final Hay whipped the resulting corner in superbly and skipper Gabriel Raine saw his flicked volley skim over the bar. SR Dons had the bit between their teeth... ...then spat it out and surrendered... From that exciting, positive start, the Dons folded like origami. Tackles were bottled, effort was low, and discipline lost. The Dons allowed a meek looking Whitburn side to gain a foothold. The game condescended into awful looking football. The Dons paid for their collapse when John McDade shoved a Whitburn player to the ground and gave away a free kick. The freekick was blasted wide but hit an un-expecting Diablo player and rolled into the Dons net. With the Dons in disarray, it fell to Goalkeeper Luke Ryan to keep the failing side in the game. But even Ryan’s fine display was marred when Whitburn punted the ball clear only to find McDade had gone wandering and Matthew Smith missed the opportunity to clear the ball. That left the Diablo striker clean through and, with Ryan misjudging his positioning, he rolled the ball into an empty net. The humiliation was dealt and despite a ‘slightly’ improved second half performance, the damage was done. Mason Lodge, moved up into midfield, came closest in the 2nd half but had his shot blocked when a simple pass to Raine or Gregory would have left them with an open goal. The score finished 2-0 to the Diablo. M.O.M – Luke Ryan
