Under attack from without...dying from within. The problems in our Union will not be fixed by changes in leadership in alone. In my view the problems in our Union are systemic, that is, problems with the very political system and structure under which our union operates. The following are some of the major problems that come to mind; The lack of the very basic right of the membership to vote for its own leaders....One Man One Vote. The lack of rank-and-file input and direct vote on important national issues and the decision making process. The CW/CE program being a perfect example. The total concentration of POWER and the membership be damned attitude of our leaders in Washington. And the right to remove them if they are not serving the membership, as the law requires. The total concentration of power in the hands of the Business Manager at the local level, which enables and facilitates corruption and the corrupted political system at the Local union level. The total intolerance of dissent, criticism or activism of any kind. Whether it be constructive or not. No, simply changing the leadership in Washington wont do. We need to REFORM and change the system that has corrupted our Union from the bottom up, and bring Democracy back into our Union!
