Under federal law, food stamp recipients can only receive food - TopicsExpress

Under federal law, food stamp recipients can only receive food stamps for three months while unemployed. After that, to continue receiving benefits, they must find employment. However, in October 2008, the federal government began issuing wavers to states, allowing citizens to keep receiving food stamps past the three-month period. The new program was named the Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program (SNAP) and was enacted primarily to keep people not-emaciated in the face of high national unemployment rates. Maine has opted out of the program. According to Maines Governor Paul LePage, “47 percent of able-bodied people in Maine don’t work,” an unattributed statement that Politifact believes to be a statistical impossibility. This really just defeats the purpose of SNAP, a program designed to help those who don’t have enough—or any—income. Requiring people in need to suddenly not be in need excludes those who, well, actually need this assistance.
