Understanding emptiness by Jackson Peterson Emptiness is NOT a void empty space in these teachings. That would be opposite to form or appearing phenomena; and would be a nihilistic definition: an extreme. Phenomena dont arise out of emptiness and then return to emptiness. Rather phenomena are themselves, in their exact appearance; emptiness. That means we dont have to get rid of the various inner and perceptual experiences. They are already empty by nature. Understanding this is beyond conceptual maneuvering. The wisdom of emptiness is a property of emptiness itself: Prajna. There is nothing negative about emptiness, its just the nature of all experience, consciousness, awareness, mind and appearing phenomena. We dont need to reduce things to emptiness, as things have never moved beyond their intrinsic emptiness; like transparent reflections appearing in a mirror. In the space between two thoughts, in the total absence of every subtle and coarse mental activity; the wisdom of emptiness reveals its pristine pervasiveness as being what you have always changelessly been. How can we describe what lies after a thought has finished and before the next thought has begun? In this unique empty gap the wisdom of emptiness is easily self-known. Its sudden revelation is called gnosis, jnana and prajna.
