Underwent a Spiritual Epiphany Today - A really good spirit friends passing Memorial Service (Clarence Shaheed DuBois). This was a GREAT man-spirit! An African American born in Brooklyn. A DuBois by heritage (as in W.E.B.). Had been raised Christian, converted to Islam, then converted to the Bahais faith. ACTIVELY belonged to over 100 organizations. Deeply engaged in food for humanity, environmental justice, world literacy, affordable housing, disaster relief equity, water justice, violence prevention, affordable health. He was a teacher, community servant, advocate, peace maker - a DOER. Quiet and humble, so many things one never knew. He spoke four languages fluently (English, Spanish, Arabic, and Hebrew) - visited the Holy Land, was a peacemaker for the United Nations, interacted heavily with the white, Jewish, and Southern racists to successfully facilitate peace and change. Honored by George Bush Sr. for his work in literacy, a Hometown Hero to the City of Decatur, on the working Group on Indigenous Populations to the U.N. So many other honors. Without knowing any of that, I had recruited him six years ago to become a Red Cross volunteer specifically to represent the not yet gentrified, highly determined Vine City community in Atlanta, which had been devastated by tornadoes. And he excelled - moved all the way up to the National Deployment team of Red Cross, with a Leadership Award from that organization. I had met his wife only once. After the Memorial Service, I went up to her to pay my respects and whispered in her ear who I was, at which point she BURST OUT IN TEARS. Feeling the depth of her grief, I rubbed my face against hers for quite some time. Its you, its you, she said. He always spoke of you and how much you meant to him, your advice and counsel. I was STUNNED. Here was a GREATER THAN LIFE figure, obviously connected to the God Force, obviously a great and faithful servant, one who has done SO MUCH. And HE considered ME his mentor. WOW!
