Unedited excerpt: Their first week of Enlightment was coming to an end with only two classes left. Hunter and Elly woke early as usual and readied themselves to spend the morning with the young and exuberant Professor Camille Badgero. She headed the Intro to Ancient Relics course. Camille was the youngest of the children’s professor’s. Camille had wavy blond hair that fell at her shoulders and bright green eyes. She was fresh out of college and as the children quickly found out during her brief course introduction, she had spent the majority of her life living in the Estate with her parents who were archeologists studying ancient ruins. She was not a member of the Seekers per say, but after she graduated from an Ivy League college and with her work studying the myths and legends of ancient relics, Professor Calenstine basically begged her to return and teach. “The world is filled with so many secrets,” Camille lectured, “not just with legendary creatures, mysterious plants, or eerie spirits–as you will learn about tomorrow morning with Professor Hobbes. –But, also with ancient and powerful relics, items that contain magical qualities, or worse, deathly curses. Who can share with me an example of a relic that would fall under this category?” The class fell silent at first. Eyes darted around the class looking for somebody to take charge with an answer. Elly raised her hand. “I read about something called Solomon’s ring, it’s supposed to be magical.” “Solomon’s ring!” Camille’s bright green eye’s widened with excitement. “Also known as Solomon’s Seal. Very interesting, Ms. Jakob’s, and right you are. A relic that I am quite fond of myself. When I was finishing up my college years, I centered my thesis around this mysterious object, which in turn is why Professor Calenstine asked me to be here today.” “What is it?” Hunter asked, a bit skeptical. “Solomon’s ring, said to be worn by King Solomon himself, is supposed to house magical qualities. Some say the ring can control spirits and grant the ability for the wearer to communicate with the dead. Others proclaim it allows the wearer the ability to speak to animals and plant life. Its origin comes from Medieval Jewish, Christian, and Islamic legends. It even appears on your sweaters as a part of the Seekers sigil.” “Really, it can control spirits?” Alistair asked, “More importantly…ghosts are real?” “Well, let’s not get to ahead of ourselves,” Camille laughed. “As you will learn tomorrow with Professor Hobbes, spirits and other paranormal activities that fall under that category are definitely considered “fringe” sciences. I am not saying the legends are true…” “Fringe?” Olivia asked. “Sure, fringe science is just a label of studies that fall outside what modern science considers ‘normal’. Much of what you do as Seekers are would be considered under the realm of fringe science. Shape shifting Wendigo’s, man eating plants, ancient rings that can grant you powers to speak to the dead, hunting for spirits using technology based on more speculation than proof. This is all fringe science.” “So is there any proof the ring exists?” Another kid asked. “Well I am proud to say, that during my thesis in grad school, with the help of the Professor who funded my research, we found what we believe to be the very ring. It is here in the Estate, in the very safe hands of Professor Calenstine.” “We have it here!” Hunter blurted out in excitement. “Why yes, it is hidden away in a safe place,” she explained. “Does it work?” Alistair asked. “Well, I cannot comment on that. I was forbidden to wear the ring once we unearthed it. I quickly handed it over to the professor. He knows best when it comes to such things. In the end I had an amazing thesis and graduated top of my class.”
