Unemployed Youth’ Protests Invalid- UIA Sam Waswa UIA boss Frank Sebowa Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) has described as ‘pretense’ recent riotous activities by a group of youths in Kampala in purported protest against lack of employment. The youths who have recently been engaged in battles with police on Kampala streets, claim to raise a red flag against the escalating rates of unemployment amongst youths in the country. They operate under their umbrella body the National Association of the Unemployed (NAU) which was formed last August, according to the Movement’s coordinator, Doreen Nyanjura. While addressing press on Wednesday, UIA Managing Director Dr Andrew Sebowa advised the youths to suggest another reason for causing unrest rather than masking behind unemployment. Regarding finding jobs, Sebowa said there exists a number of windows in which the youths could engage themselves in self employment rather than engaging the police. “If really there are ten of you, those are 10 ideas boiling in your heads. If you go to SACCOs or Micro finances with a genuine project, someone will surely fund it. You won’t start at top end of salaries.” Sebowa added, “There are some people I know in Katwe and Kikuubo, who started with as little as Sh 50,000, but now need a bullion van. Banks are actually locating in these areas.” As the country grapples with more university output against minimal jobs available, the UIA boss maintains that government’s role isn’t to dish out jobs but to create an enabling environment through infrastructure and project supporting programs.
