Unemployment in Syria is at an all-time high. Men, both old and young, risk their lives on a daily basis working in dangerous makeshift refineries to provide for their families. They buy the oil from the Kurds, refine it and sell it southwards, to Islamic State-controlled regions. Many of the workers are IS-sympathisers, some like the Kurds, others dont particularly care - but mostly they just want to make a living. My latest from northern Syria, for the Economist.
