Union, non-union join to help veteran: A disabled veteran and his family will be able to live in the home abandoned and left unfinished by a contractor thanks to a combined effort of union and non-union volunteers and donations. The Carpenter and Millwright Local 1091 and its training academy in Center heard of the plight of Chuck and Sue Stewart, whose house in Underwood remains unfinished while the couple lives in a fifth-wheeler in Minot, and decided to step in and help. Chuck Stewart is a career U.S. Air Force veteran diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. The one-level home is designed to accommodate his condition. The couple started their building project with a contractor who died in January 2014 of a heart attack then hired a second contractor, who disappeared, leaving the project in disarray. The union will help finish the house as a way to train its apprentices and engage retirees. The Minot Builders Association is serving as project manager and the association, and its members, are making substantial donations to the house. Others that have become involved are the Bismarck Building and Trades, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. — Lauren Donovan bismarcktribune/news/local/the-tribune-awards/collection_77c580a0-9107-11e4-bb7c-fb222e990bf7.html
