University Students Encouraged To Embrace Entrepreneurship Oke Efagene | 13:53 | 03.10.2014 Students in Nigerias tertiary institutions have been urged to consider entrepreneurship in order to conquer the problem of unemployment in the country. Undergraduates in Nigerian universities have been urged to focus on developing their entrepreneurship skills in order to overcome the challenges of unemployment. This piece of advice was given by the President of the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni (UMA), Alhaji Lere Alimi, while addressing the fifth capacity building workshop organised by the association in Lagos. According to Nigerian Tribune, Alimi observed that government at all levels were not well equipped to offer employment to the teeming school leavers in the country, thereby necessitating the need for entrepreneurship. In a lecture entitled, the Nigeria ICT Industry: Springboard for Enterprises Development and Wealth Creation, the Managing Director of Accenture Nigeria, Mr Niyi Yusuf, identified opportunities for young entrepreneurs in ICT, saying the Nigerian market was fertile because of the countrys population. He, however, stressed the need for development of ideas capable of selling and attracting investments, stressing that lack of personal fund should not be a barrier. Another facilitator at the workshop, the Managing Director of Optiedge Nigeria Ltd, Mr Goke Qosim Adeyemi, speaking on Multi Tasking Skill, emphasised the need for proper management of time. He identified some of the skills required in effective multi tasking to include categorisation of tasks according to their importance, writing the list of tasks on paper, listing steps necessary to achieve the objectives as well as eliminating time wasting task. Discussing small and medium enterprises with particular reference to joint venture, the Managing Director of Toptech Engineering, Mr Abdul Waheed Odeyinka, itemised factors that must be present to ensure success of partnership. These include existence of written agreements, ensuring that each of the partners is adding something, identifiable leadership and agreement on remuneration of the partners. The workshop, which was the fifth in the series, was initially organised by UMA for Muslim undergraduates and graduates before the university authority charged the body to make the benefits available to Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
