University of KwaZulu Natal SCF Westville Campus Communiqué to student community on 2014/2015 SRC Elections Revolutionary greetings to all the students of the University of KwaZulu Natal Westville Campus. The purpose of this communiqué is to enlighten the student community about the ongoing SRC Election and to paint a vivid picture of what exactly is the cause of the current turmoil on campus. We are aware that some elements have gone out full force, to tell students incorrect information with the aim of achieving their political goals. We appreciate the fact that –that is the nature of politics; other elements would do and say anything to manipulate students. As SCF we have never degenerated to a level of malice and de-campaigning other organisations, it’s against our nature, not that we don’t have anything to say about the injustices students have undergone under their leadership, but because of who we are and what we believe in we have always campaigned about what we can do and will do when we get to office. South Africa is a constitutional democracy, meaning that the supreme law of the land is the Constitution of the republic. Even within our university, the SRC Constitution governs the functioning of the SRC and Schedule A of the Constitution clearly outlines the process that shall be followed during Elections. The below clause of the constitution of the SRC is what is currently in contention. 5.2 LIST OF CANDIDATES NOMINATED BY STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS CONTESTING THE ELECTIONS 5.2.1 Each student organization contesting the LSRC elections must submit a list of between five and ten candidates per campus, or between ten and twenty candidates in the case of CSRC elections. 5.2.2 Every candidate nominated by a student organization must be a registered student, and must submit a signed acceptance of nomination, together with a copy of his/her current student card. Candidates nominated for an LSRC, must be registered on the campus concerned. 5.2.3 The list of student organization candidates must be ranked in order of priority for assuming a seat on the CSRC or LSRC as the case may be. 5.2.4 Failure to submit a correctly completed list of candidates, or any other information or materials required by the Electoral Commission will result in the elimination of an organization from participation in the elections Certain organizations did not meet the full requirements as it relates to contesting the Central SRC, and were therefore were disqualified by the IEC. The candidate list submitted by these organisations was below the minimum number of ten candidates to contest for the CSRC. As a result they were disqualified. We therefore must make it categorically clear, that 1. SCF complied with all the provisions of the Electoral policy and are eligible to contest for the Central SRC. 2. It must also be clear that SCF has no control of who contests or doesn’t, the IEC does under guidance of the constitution. 3. SCF has no responsibility whatsoever in the other organizations failure to comply with the constitution. We therefore would like to encourage students of the Westville campus, to come out in their numbers to vote. It is not about who you vote for; it is about exercising your democratic right to elect your SRC. We must not allow anyone to take away that right from us. Voting stations are opened till late Friday evening. We also wish to advise the affected organizations to utilize proper channels of raising their objections and queries. Intimidating students will not assist. Written objections must be submitted and dealt by the relevant people. Courts can also be approached should the organizations feel the need. Again we strongly condemn the use of intimidation to stop students from exercising their democratic right As the Student Christian Fellowship we wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to all students for their continued support and encouragement during this difficult and challenging period. We must admit that at times we have felt like giving up and letting things be, but because of the passion, zeal and commitment to serving our students and ensuring that quality services are delivered to them, we have soldiered on. We have endured insults, persecutions and even physical altercations but in all of that we have stood firm for what we believe in.
