Unperturbed by the gale of impeachment allegedly targeted at opposition in the country, the Chairman, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, Hon Al-Hassan Yahaya Bagudu, in Ilorin yesterday dared the presidency and the Peoples Democratic Party to commence similar subterranean move in the State. Bagudu said such attempt will fail because the state political leadership has a firm structure. Kwara is under the control of the All Progressives Congress, which lost one of the states under its grip following the sack of Admiral Muritala Nyako (rtd) of Adamawa State by the PDP members of the State House of Assembly. A scenario akin to that is currently at play in Nasarawa State where 20 PDP lawmakers in the state Assembly had commenced impeachment process against Governor Umar Tanko Al-Makura for gross misconduct and abuse of office. Though tension has since enveloped the state as a number of people of Nasarawa are spoiling for a showdown should the legislature make good Al-Makura’s impeachment plot even in the event of institution of probe panel by the Chief Judge of the state. In an exclusive interview with The Herald On Sunday at the Lailatul Quadr (Night of Majesty) organised by Kwara State zone of Nasrul-Lahi-L-Fatih Society of Nigeria (NASFAT), the Kaiama coucil boss said with the impeachment wave, the Federal Government was not ready to nurture the nation’s nascent democracy to maturity He said the constitutional provisions were being abused by some state lawmakers in the name of impeaching their governors. Bagudu explained that it was worrisome that the federal government had resorted into inducing some states lawmakers to effect removal of their governors, advising Kwarans not to be swayed by the ploy. He said, “There is no doubt about it; there is a lot of politicking in it. Because if you look at it from what has happened, and the threats that are coming up already, it portends that the Federal Government is losing its pledge of ensuring that democracy, which we have always described as nascent, is nurtured. It appears government is not prepared to nurture it to maturity. The council chairman called on the people to come out en-masse for the collection of permanent voters’ card, which will soon be distributed by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
