Unsolicited writerly advice of the day! Ive made this point - TopicsExpress

Unsolicited writerly advice of the day! Ive made this point before, but I always see it asked on Facebook, so its worth revisiting. In writing, your main characters physical description only matters in the moment that it MATTERS. This helps to smooth out early chapters, keeps the pacing moving, and immerses your reader in your characters total experience. Dont Example: As I wait for Brad, I check out my tall, thin frame in the mirror. Im wearing a new, blue satin gown, but I change into my old, trusty black one before the doorbell rings. These descriptors only matter if, in that moment, your tall, thin frame and variety of dress choices changes your perspective, alters the stakes, or affects your actions. Do Example: As I wait for Brad, I check out my new gown in the mirror. Shit. The shiny blue satin clings to all the wrong edges of my tall, thin frame. I whip the dress off and scramble into my old, trusty black dress before the doorbell rings.
