Unsolved murders: Natalie Clark It’s been 11 years since Natalie Clark was found suffocated in the backyard of her Hephzibah home, but her 68-year-old mother continues to ask questions. Natalie, 18, was a freshman at Augusta State University and a recent graduate of Hephzibah High School. “I’ve gone over it every day since Oct. 18, 2003,” Louise said. “Every single day. I know I probably won’t get an answer, but I’ll never stop trying.” Richmond County sheriff’s Investigator Paul Godden said there’s a suspect but not enough evidence to press charges. He said the suspect has been interviewed and questioned, while the case is considered “pending.” Clark says “it’s been years” since she’s heard from the sheriff’s office, who assigned Richard Roundtree, now sheriff, to lead the investigation in 2003. One year and one day after Natalie’s death, Roundtree was replaced by Steve Fanning as head investigator. “Steve Fanning is a great man and I have so much respect for the effort he put into my daughter’s case,” Clark said. “But during the first year, the sheriff’s department was running in the wrong direction.
