Update from my mother just now: Stuck away from home due to floods. While tall claims are being made on TV about rescue operations by armed forces, they are not visible on ground. We only saw them hoarding tankers full of fresh water for their camps from civilian supplies at Shopian today. No boats are available at peripheral points of the flood waters for movement of people. Hundreds of people are sleeping under open sky at Panthachowk. They are all hungry and thirsty. Need immediate supplies of food and drinking water. Srinagar looks haunted. Athwajan chowk looks like a devastated sea from the bypass highway. Only VIPs, tourists and non-Kashmiri laborers are being rescued using the helicopters. There is absolute communication breakdown; havent heard a word from my family at Lalbazar since last five days who are probably stuck in the floods. As of right now none of the telecommunication companys network is working in the areas still under floods where it is needed most. In the rest of areas the service is frustratingly intermittent and Im not even sure that this post will see light of the Internet after all. I am stuck at Chanapora area of Srinagar with my ailing mother. There is acute shortage of clean water. I appeal anyone with any information about Lalbazar area to please share the same. Also if any authorities are reading this, please airlift the stranded passengers from Pathachowk and please help us reach our home. My mother needs medical attention.
