Update on the Irish Defence Forces team competing in the 14th US Army International Snipers Competition; During the last 48 hours the sniper team competed a number of events, back to back, to simulate an endurance and stress shoot. The first event was a hostage target interdiction where a number of friendly targets were co-located with enemy forces. The snipers moved into a firing position ranging from 600m to 400m and neutralised all enemy forces. This was made extremely difficulty by smoke screens preventing PID (Positive Identification) and all targets moving at speed. Following this event the sniper team received a fresh tasking, to advance by foot tactically through the night over 6 kilometres to a firing position, engage all targets and withdraw. On return to friendly lines they received new orders, to engage a HVT (High value Target), incorporating an arduous 2 Kilometre stalk, crawling through thick Savannah bush, navigating through alligator infested swamps, and locating a suitable firing position in order to see and not been seen. After executing the shot the sniper duo made their withdrawal back through a safe route to be receive a new task, a high speed close combat engagement. At the end of the endurance event all teams where exhausted and earned a short rest. Updates to follow…..Béir Bua!
