Update on the severe weather warnings - Heavy rain for the north and east of the North Island and Marlborough. Severe gales for many North Island places and also the Marlborough Sounds. A deep subtropical low approaching from the north is expected to lie over Northland tonight (Tuesday), with rain and southeast gales spreading over most of the North Island and upper South Island. The low is expected to move southeast tomorrow, to lie near East Cape by midnight. From Tuesday afternoon, the heaviest rain is likely to be about eastern Northland, the Coromandel Peninsula, Gisborne and parts of Hawkes Bay, and should ease in Northland and the Coromandel Peninsula Tuesday night. Expect 100mm of rain in these areas, but 150mm in the ranges of Gisborne through to early Wednesday morning. The rain is likely to continue through much of Wednesday morning in Hawkes Bay. Rain should spread south into Marlborough Tuesday night, and continue through much of Wednesday, and 120mm of rain may accumulate about some eastern hills and ranges. People in all these areas are advised that rivers and streams will rise rapidly, and slips and localised surface flooding are likely. In addition, gale southeasterlies are expected to rise to severe gale in Northland, Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula and eastern Waikato from Tuesday afternoon through to about midnight Tuesday, with damaging gusts of 130 km/h. In Northland, the wind is expected to turn southwest Tuesday evening, and severe gales may persist through much of Wednesday. Further south, severe southeast gales with damaging gusts of 120 km/h are expected in parts of Taranaki, Horowhenua/Kapiti, the central North Island high country and about the Marlborough Sounds Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. Winds of this strength are likely to bring down trees and powerlines, may cause damage to insecure structures, and make driving hazrdous, especially for motorcycles and high-sided vehicles. metservice/national/warnings/severe-weather-warnings
