Update this by Patricia A. Smith Are you good about weeding out your closet and getting rid of garments that you will never wear again? I am. I’m so adept at this that I can almost do it in my sleep. I’m not a shopaholic (anymore; I’ve been cured), which makes it easy to fill out or update my wardrobe as necessary without making the cardinal mistakes of my youth. With a quick look, I can determine what needs to go and how soon it will make its exit. I mentally clear out my wardrobe, cupboards, drawers and pantry every single time I open them. So how come I can’t do this with my email or the 644 copies of the same photo of my LinkedIn profile on my computer? Because I’m a little challenged technologically (which means that I haven’t kept up with the curve) and a little more than scared of what’s behind all those warnings when I commit to throwing out the trash. In effect, I’m also lazy. Down with a virus, I decided to tackle this lingering problem once and for all by applying my de-cluttering skills to my computer. I had nothing but free time and a hacking cough. How difficult could this be for an OCD person like me? Let’s call this more than an arduous journey. I spent three days of my life that I will never get back with my eyes glazed reviewing information, email exchanges, documents, downloads and images that I have already seen more than 100 times before. It was like a funhouse mirror when I realized how often some of these items had replicated themselves and set up cozy homes in the memory of my computer. They were virtual squatters. Hiding behind aliases and lurking in tired corners of my hard drive, an army of stunt doubles, triplets and copycats had been dancing the night away and slowing down my ability to do anything but watch the spinning beach ball that taunted me every time I tried to do anything. Not anymore. Spring-cleaning complete, albeit six months later, I’ve gotten rid of the demons and gremlins that have systematically kept my system in the dark ages. Not a moment too soon. I can finally stop ignoring the notification to update my software. Update this.
