Updates from Partnerships in Education Office (MOE) Dear Parent Support Group Chairpersons/Parent Representatives, You may have read or heard about ASPIRE, which stands for the Applied Study in Polytechnics and ITE Review (ASPIRE) Committee. It was c haired by Senior Minister of State(SMS) Indranee Rajah. ASPIRE’s report, which Parliament has accepted on 9 September 2014, is really about Better Choices, Deeper Skills, Multiple Paths: • BETTER CHOICES: Helping students make better education and career choices; • DEEPER SKILLS: Creating more opportunities for polytechnic and ITE students and graduates to grow the skills they need, to excel in the career they choose to pursue; and • MULTIPLE PATHS: Building more paths that will allow polytechnic and ITE graduates to progress in their careers by developing their skills. A snapshot of the recommendations can be found at this moe.gov.sg/aspire/files/aspire-infographic-new.pdf. ASPIRE is about creating multiple opportunities to realise aspirations, creating multiple pathways to success and facilitating progression and advancement. It is also about embracing lifelong learning, valuing every individual and respecting every job and letting people go forward, not by always and only looking back to their start point, but by how they perform, what they achieve, and what they become. ASPIRE encourages us to break through these limiting beliefs: • to go beyond qualifications to the pursuit of excellence, by recognising that attitude, deep skills, knowledge and experience matter if we want to perform and excel • to go beyond the classroom to recognise the value of applied learning and lifelong learning - and make the workplace a great learning place • to go beyond narrow definitions of success to recognise that everyone excels at different things, in different ways, and that we can all excel if we apply our minds, hands, and hearts to what we do ASPIRE: The Journey – A game-filled trip through life’s choices ASPIRE: The Journey is a game app developed by MOE to help our students in secondary schools and post-secondary institutions better understand what ASPIRE is about. The app brings players on a trip through life’s twist and turns, through a series of mini-games. Along the way, they will need to consider questions like: What are you good at? When should you enter the workforce, or go for skills upgrading? How about going back to school? There’s a surprise ending waiting for players who complete the game. The experience can serve as a launch pad for conversations with your children about the path they wish to take in the future, and how they can develop the skills they need to reach their goals. The SkillsFuture Council members have just wda.gov.sg/content/wdawebsite/L209-001About-Us/L219-PressReleases/05_Nov_2014.html on 05 November 2014. The recommendations of the ASPIRE Committee, and the new CET masterplan, signal the importance of looking beyond academic qualifications, to build and develop skills among Singaporeans in the next chapter of Singapore’s development as a nation. The SkillsFuture Council, chaired by DPM Tharman, will build on the work of these two initiatives and lead the way for Singaporeans to build a future based on skills and mastery in every job. Join us in driving these breakthroughs and supporting our children in making better choices to realise their aspirations! We can do so through building skills that work for them, multiple pathways and learning throughout one’s lifetime. Together, we can develop a culture that celebrates every Singaporean!
