Updates from the Cull Zone. Day 39. The evening started - TopicsExpress

Updates from the Cull Zone. Day 39. The evening started immediately and intensely for some with a long stand-off between shooters and anti-cull people in the north of the zone. A local woman had contacted GBO earlier in the day to ask if the setts she knows and loves were being targeted by the cull operators. Unfortunately (fortunately?) they were heavily targeted both last year and this... but also heavily protected. Using her private track, the shooter had gained access to land on which he had been attempting to shoot almost every night since the beginning of the cull. The local woman had just met up with some of the anti-cull people working within the area when the shooter was spotted and called in to the office. Angry that he had been using her land as an access point and was trying to kill her badger neighbours, the lady rushed back home quicker than the sabs could get there. After two and a half hours and the involvement of the police, the shooter moved on having been compromised repeatedly. The lady has now become a good ally with local knowledge and an obviously strong desire to stop badgers being killed near to her home. Meanwhile, an area in the west of the zone was targeted twice by the same group of shooters throughout the night, who were prevented from shooting on both occasions by the same group of sabs. Well done to those on the scene. Again, police were present at the location. Another sett in the south was also targeted and shooters seen off, various dodgy spotter-vehicles being found in the vicinity. Hedley Midwinter continues to make an appearance. Although now claims to sit on the fence when it comes to the cull. Funny - hes got a strange ability to act very pro-cull in his everyday activities... At least David Lloyd is just open about who he is. A very dedicated group of people with a number of setts they are responsible for sadly found a dead badger who had been run over by a car in the vicinity of their area. To the nearby shouts of just leave it in a bag on my gate and Ill get the NFU to pick it up tomorrow from local pro-cull people looking to make an easy £50 the group took the badger body away to give him a more respectable burial. Unfortunately, while we didnt think it could get any worse for a certain group of setts recently featuring far-too-often in the GBO nightly round-ups, more diesel has been found poured into the entrances of setts already hit just days ago. This time the police response (or lack thereof) was far from adequate, whereas they have been very good on previous occasions, at least coming to check out the setts and log the location. Obviously getting bored that were having to report the same incidents occurring night after night... In the words of one sab out there tonight, officers, if you dont do anything about it, we will. Food arrived in the zone just before midnight, advertised in advance as Pumpkin Soup, Mystery Bean Soup, Onion & Garlic Bread, Plain Bread and the Ugliest Chocolate Cake in the World (all homemade). All sounding delicious. One sab is forever in office-sabs debt as a slice of garlic bread destined for her stomach was left on the roof of a car as it drove away. Hope the night scavengers will enjoy it... On a more serious note, as we write (a couple of) reports are still coming in of activity in different areas, although neighbouring autonomous groups are doing really well backing one another up when necessary - good solidarity and teamwork out there! Some reports, as usual, of shooter and spotter vehicles seen arriving in areas and turning away as soon as an anti-cull-presence was sensed nearby. Other good reports coming in from the zone tonight as well suggesting that badgers lives will most certainly have been saved by the actions of the little groups out there! Well done all - its been a tough 5 weeks up until now and weve done a fantastic job. GBO
