Upwards delegation. 1. Usually happens when a boss is a micro manager. He wants to be involved in every decision. So instead of solving problems and doing things, staffs push every issue to his desk. 2. Also happens when a boss hires incompetent employees and is quick to offer help by taking over tasks. This type of bosses normally encourages employees to delegate upwards. 3. Happens when a boss has a tendency to pick up a fight on behalf of his staff. This encourages staff to escalate issues and complaint about other departments. The boss then picks up the phone and scream murder at the other guy or the other guys boss. Upward delegation, when happens routinely is a sympton of poor leadership. The responsibility is on the leaders to push responsibilities back to the incumbent and to hold him accountable. Do not solve problems for your subordinate...instead lead, coach, and help him to solve his own problems. Bosses are hired not to baby sit!
