Utilizing a top-down methodology often cited by great coaches such as Dr. Mike Stone and Harvey Newton, Lizzie first demonstrated that she was able effectively catch the weight in the receiving position in our first video. The next step in the process was to give Lizzie an idea of what Triple Extension meant or more importantly, how the bar is able to effectively travel to that mid-chest position so she can catch or receive it in the first place. To do so, we first took the bar away entirely and just had Lizzie focus on Extending forcefully into here hands (video 2). The reason for this is that we are essentially trying to mimic and impart the joint kinematics of the Second Pull of the clean, where in true Olympic lifting fashion, the athlete would have already pulled the bar from the ground (utilizing a slight inward sweeping action towards the shins) to create strong pretension in the hamstrings, hips and overall posterior chain musculature. This is akin to loading a spring so that we can utilize the myotatic stretch-reflex of the posterior-chain musculature (when the time is right!) to forcefully extend and move the bar upwards once this second pull movement is initiated.
