VA plans ribbon cutting at new Green Bay Clinic VA will hold a ribbon cutting and open house 10:30 a.m. Aug. 15 at the new Milo C. Huempfner Green Bay Regional Outpatient Center. The center is located at 2851 University Avenue in Green Bay. The center will open Aug. 19, initially providing services for those 3,500 veterans currently enrolled and receiving care at the Green Bay Community Based Outpatient Clinic. As capacity expands at the center in 2014, VA will begin to enroll additional veterans, and eventually have the capability to treat as many as 20,000 veterans. The new center is 161,525 square feet compared to 7,616 square feet at the current facility. It will initially offer Primary Care and Mental Health. As services ramp up, VA will offer a wide range of services. It will not have an emergency department or offer in-patient care. Dr. Robert Petzel, under secretary for health in the Department of Veterans Affairs, will be the guest speaker. In addition, the children of Huempfner will be in attendance. Huempfner, a Green Bay native, was a World War II soldier who received the Distinguished Service Cross, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was lauded for his heroic efforts in December 1944 when he singlehandedly waged war against a German tank column in Leignon, Belgium. He destroyed armored vehicles, neutralized a machine gun position, captured many enemy soldiers and guarded the local church so the townspeople could celebrate Mass on Christmas Eve.
