#VBNSWCUP MATCH REPORT R22 v Wentworthville Magpies Sun 11/8 Centrebet Stadium OL WOLVES WILT IN DEFENCE It’s been spoken about at length in recent weeks the need to improve the attitude in defence but a 88 point bonanza in the 46-42 loss to the Wentworthville Magpies at Centrebet Stadium earlier this afternoon proves the point that the Windsor still have some considerable work to do in this aspect with just 4 weeks remaining to the finals. Windsor were bolstered by the late inclusion of Nathan Smith & Geoff Daniela who were originally selected to play first grade this week, while Liam Ayoub returned from injury to replace the injured Daniel Foster at hooker. The point scoring spree commenced in just the 3rd minute when a Chris Sandow cut-out pass allowed his winger Dylon Gilbert to get the better of Eto Nabuli to score out wide. In the 5th minute, replacement fullback Charlie Herekotukutuku backed up a Taniela Lasalo line break from halfway to score under the posts to give the Magpies 10-0 lead. The lead was extended further after just 11 minutes when a Sandow grubber took a wicked bounce off the goal posts before prop Brendan McKinnon dived on the loose ball to give the Magpies a 16-0 lead. The Wolf Pack, starved of any meaningful possession since kickoff, were further punished for a soft attitude in defence when Sandow & Herekotukutuku combined to keep play alive up the middle before shifting right to find centre to score out wide. Sandow missed the conversion but in the next set, another line break this time on Windsor’s right edge from centre Brayden Wiliame allowed winger Dominic Reardon to score in the left corner. Despite Sandow missing his 3rd conversion from 5 attempts, Wentworthville were well in control leading 24-0 midway through the 1st half. Windsor scored their first try against the run of play when Bryce Cartwright swooped on a loose pass & ran 40m to score under the posts, converted by Wes Naiqama. Windsor scored another three tries in seven minutes to level the scores on the back of decent possession & equally poor defence from the Magpies. The first try came when prop Sam Anderson charged onto a short reverse pass to crash over under the posts. From the next set, a Geoff Daniela line break from inside his own half allowed Luke Capewell to score underneath the posts & a George Jennings line break allowed Kierran Moseley to score in the next play from close range. A Sandow 40/20 on the stroke of halftime allowed Wentworthvillle to regain the lead after inability to put the ball carrier to ground allowed the Magpies to keep the play alive through several offloads before an overlap was created for Reardon to score in the corner. Sandow’s sideline conversion gave Wentworthville a 30-24 half time lead. The second try threatened to resume in the same manner as the first as Wentworthville opened up a 36-24 lead after interchange forward Kenny Edwards strolled through some poor Wolves defence on halfway before dummying to the fullback to score under the posts. Windsor halved the margin minutes later when a scrum win allowed Travis Robinson to slice through the Magpies defence to score 40m out. Scores were level once more when a Blake Austin 40/20 kick midway through the second half allowed Luke Capewell to stroll through the Magpies defence from 15m out but minutes later Wentworthville were able to make easy metres down the middle & on the fringes before an attempted Capewell intercept on the last tackle failed to stop the Magpies taking advantage of overlap to put Reardon in for his hat-trick. Pewhairangi converted from the sideline to give the Magpies a 42-36 lead once more. A Luke Capewell cross field kick to Nabuli was taken in spectacular fashion as the Fijian flyer leapt thru the air, juggled then dived forward to catch the ball & score in the one movement. Naiqama’s conversion levelled the scores once more 42-42 with 7 minutes remaining. An error in the next set gave the Magpies vital territorial advantage to score the match winning try in the dying minutes of the game when a quick shift left allowed McKenzie to step inside Naiqama & score his second try. Both coaches would not have been happy with the lack of defence shown but coach Garth Brennan was especially dumb founded after the game, again questioning the attitude of his team after another inept defensive display that has seen 84 points leaked in the past two games. Next Saturday, the Wolves return to Windsor Sporting Complex with a Back To Windsor Day double-header promotion, when they take on the North Sydney Bears at 6PM. Final Score: Wentworthville 46 (Tries: Reardon 3, McKenzie 2, Gilbert, Herekotukutuku, McKinnon, Edwards Goals: Sandow 4/7 Pewhairangi 1/2) def. Windsor 42 (Tries: Capewell 2, Cartwright, Anderson, Moseley, Robinson, Nabuli Goals: Naiqama 7/7)
