VEL Lecture Series Presents: The monkeys and us: A tale of romance, adventure and scientific discovery Filippo Aureli and Colleen Schaffner, Professors of primate behavior at the Universidad Veracruzana, will discuss how they came to find themselves in Mexico studying the graceful, complex and intelligent spider monkeys. Colleen and Filippo will take you through a world that is not so different from our own: the world of wild spider monkeys. In doing so, they will highlight how they met, and provide a glimpse into some of their most interesting scientific discoveries. They will end the presentation by discussing their new venture forming an NGO for the conservation of monkeys and their habitat in the Yucatan Peninsula. Brief Bio Colleen received her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from The George Washington University, her Master’s from Bucknell University in Animal Behavior and her PhD from the University of Nebraska in Biological Psychology. She has held teaching and research posts at The College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University in Minnesota and at The University of Chester in England where she also served as Director of the Graduate School. Filippo received his Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and received his PhD in Animal Behavior from Utrecht University in the Netherlands. He then held a post doctorate post at Emory University in Atlanta and from there went onto to Liverpool John Moores University in England where he had a teaching and research post and has been the Director of the Research Center for Evolutionary Anthropology and Paleoecology. Colleen and Filippo currently work at Universidad Veracruzana where they teach a course on the Social Systems of Animals, conduct research and supervise graduate students. They live near Chemax, 30 minutes from Valladolid and 30 minutes from Punta Laguna where they carry out part of their research.
