VERTICALLY ILL? I remember the sermon preached during an evening service, the pastor stated that sicknesses can be categorized into two-horizontal and vertical sicknesses. Horizontal sickness, he said, is the kind of sickness that makes one bed-ridden thereby leading to an inability to take care for ones self. While vertical sickness is such that allows the person to still move about or function as normal (Paraphrased). After he said these things, it occured to me that this had spiritual implications. A person could be deeply involved in whatever department of the church and still be vertically sick, spiritually. This implies that the backslidden state of such a one is more internal than external, hence cannot be easily pointed at or detected relative to a full blown sinner, whose attributes are easily noticeable. As christian pilgrims, it is very important that we table whatever internal struggles we might have before God, because if such illness are not severely dealt with, they have the tendency to pull us back to the mud we were once picked from. Even as we celebrate this easter, lets examine ourselves and ask God to seat on us and file out all sinful tendencies, negative character traits and addictions.
