VERY IMPORTANT TO READ! Hey everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend after our I71 victory, and thank you to those who joined us on Friday for our chill-sesh. As I mentioned in a previous post, the battle of legalizing marijuana in DC is not over. We still have a couple steps to take before I71 is officially enacted, and the first one is making sure that the ballot initiative passes through city council without change. To help, we need to send emails/letters or call our respective council members and let them know why I71 needs pass through city council unaltered. This is super important! And will lead up to a Congressional lobby day on the 19th (more information on the later). Below are two sets of information: 1) which council member represents the ward of each school and 2) the basic points on why we need I71 to go through as is. If you need any help or want me to look at your letter before you send it, email me at [email protected]. Council Members for each school (email address can be located in link)... Howard/Law: Jim Graham, Ward 1, dccouncil.us/council/jim-graham American: Mary Cheh, Ward 3, dccouncil.us/council/mary-m.-cheh GW/Law: Jack Evans, Ward 2, dccouncil.us/council/jack-evans Georgetown: Jack Evans, Ward 2, dccouncil.us/council/jack-evans Basic points to put in your email/letter/call... 1) Voters passed THIS specific initiative. 2) Because we passed a similar decriminalization bill early this sumer, we have a baseline to copy. It will have a much easier time passing without a taxation and regulation amendment added on. We can then pass the taxation and regulation bill later on as another small step rather than a giant leap. 3) By legalizing first, we are building a solid foundation that taxation and regulation will be stabilized by. If congress decides to shoot down tax. and reg. bill we have still legalized marijuana! Tax. and reg. bill is going to be a much longer and complex discussion than I71 will be alone. 4) Passing them separately means that legalization happens faster, which means less people paying fines and being imprisoned for a substance that we voted and made legal on the 4th. Again, if you have any questions please call, email, or message me! I would love to help you work on this. We really need everyone to form an email or make a call! It will take very little of your time and have a huge impact on how the council members act. If you can, get a friend or two to do the same! The more people we have contact their council members, the better off we will be. If you do take the five minutes to make a call or email, comment on this post so I can know how we are doing number-wise! Thanks for all of your hard work!!!
