VILLAGE PHONE BOX HOUSES LIFE-SAVING DEFIBRILLATOR A VILLAGE phone box has become home to a life-saving defibrillator. Lartington Parish Council worked with residents to kick-start the project and raised around £1300 so the village, near Barnard Castle, could have one. It has now joined other villages in Teesdale who have access to the equipment which delivers an electric shock when someone is suffering a cardiac arrest. Parish clerk, Ian Jerred, explained how the village was unable to purchase a defibrillator previously because it did not have a village hall to store it in. But after buying the old phone box, in Bowes Road, from BT for £1, the council was also offered a redundant NHS defibrillator. “It is the first response and we are happy, it was the right thing for the village,” Mr Jerred said. “Statistically, it’s suggested that these things are used once a year and of course we don’t want people queuing up to use it – we would be quite happy if it’s never used.” BT have agreed to maintain the electricity supply to the phone box for the next seven years and councilors are working with the North-East Ambulance Service to provide training for it. Mr Jerred added: “If anyone is interested in learning how to use it there are still places available – it’s important that people know how.” The next training session which will be held at Cotherstone Village Hall, Monday, October 20, at 7pm.
