VISION CHECK: Clarion University just released a press release including the following: “As required under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, Clarion has notified APSCUF of the possible retrenchment of two faculty members in the psychology department,” said Dr. Karen Whitney, president, Clarion University. “These positions were identified as part of last fall’s workforce plan.” We do not believe that last years retrenchments had any sort of positive impact on the university. Although several faculty left for other positions and there were several retirements that probably occurred earlier than anticipated, most retrenched faculty retained positions at the university (a number were reassigned to new position). On the downside, we believe that retrenchments negatively impacted university enrollments, admissions to the university, and faculty morale. We believe that the university lost more than it could have possibly gained. Further, announcing retrenchments in psychology--when retirements are very likely--only damages the psychology department (which has strong enrollments) and creates additional bad PR for the university. This should be a time of rebuilding on all levels and creating a forward thinking vision for the university. Unfortunately, this announcement misses the boat, failing to provide a vision or willingness to rebuild.
