VISIT!! ~ Selene ~ The Newport News Public Art Foundation will install it’s 17th installation of large-scale art Selene. The creamy marble statue of a young woman will be lowered onto the man-made island, where she will gaze serenely at Lion’s bridge. Selene, a 7-foot, 8,455-pound, (4 Ton) figure sculpted by Italian artist Maria Gamundi, is the Newport News Public Art Foundations latest project. A construction crew began work on the platform on Thursday, and the statue will be lowered into place on Nov. 19. Maria Gamundi carved the sculpture from a 22,000-pound (11 Ton) block of Carrara marble. The statue cost about $78,000, covered by private donations. Gamundi took a year to complete the work. The sculpture will be unveiled at a public ceremony at 11 a.m. Nov. 23. The statue will be lit at night by LED lights installed on rods a short distance from the art. Capo said the lights will be just below the waters surface so reflections of the water will play across the marble. dailypress/news/newport-news/dp-nws-nn-new-statue-1107-20131106-001,0,1912958.photo
