VISITING D-DAY CONNEAUT PREPARING FOR YOUR VISIT We recommend preparing for your visit by printing ours schedule and the site map. Visit ddayohio.us for full event information. All activities are out of doors so be prepared for any type of weather. Backpacks and small coolers are welcome, but please don’t leave them unattended! You may wish to bring a blanket or lawn/stadium chairs for viewing the battle and other demonstrations. PARKING AND SHUTTLE BUSES Parking for the movie Thursday night is on site or on the streets surrounding the park where parking is allowed. On Friday and Saturday there is NO ONSITE PARKING. If you forget to bring your copy of the map of our parking areas, signs will direct you from I-90 to our parking areas. Volunteers will direct you to a parking spot. You may be directed to another lot if the lot you have selected is full. Once you have parked, please proceed to the designated pick up point. We ask your patience if you experience a brief wait for the returning bus. It is much faster to take our shuttle to the site than to try to find on street parking. For this event, most streets near the site are marked as “no parking” to maintain clear access for the buses. The shuttle ride is rarely more than a few minutes. Shuttle buses will drop you at the east entrance to the park. Golf cart transit is available for visitors who are mobility impaired but who choose to ride the regular buses. Please proceed to the canvas awning to obtain golf cart transportation. Handicapped parking is available with wheel chair accessible bussing. Please see the asking map for location. Please have your handicapped sign visible. Shuttle locations are marked on the park map and by canvas awnings with benches. If you have limited mobility and would like a ride to your next destination within the park, please use this location for a pick up. Our cart drivers will circulate through the park and make regular stops. There is no onsite parking for event visitors as we have filled the park with living historians, their camps and displays. Strollers and wheelchairs should be ready to fold before getting on the shuttle bus to avoid delays. ONCE YOU ARRIVE AT THE PARK The event opens to the public at 0900h but you may arrive up to 15 minutes before opening time. If you arrive before that time, shuttles may not yet be running. The first shuttle pick up starts at 0830. Before 0830, we are busy preparing for your visit! The site closes at 1700h (5PM). Our shuttles will run for approximately 30 minutes afterward so please be aware of the time after the site closes. Pets are not permitted and Fido really won’t enjoy all the loud noises. Please leave your pets at home. Service animals are always welcome! If you choose to bring a blanket or chair for seating.... We ask that those wishing to sit at ground level be given priority for the first 20’ closest to the rope lines. Those wishing to use chairs should set up 20’ from the rope lines so as to not obscure the view of those sitting at ground level. Those visitors wishing to stand for the demonstration should allow those with chairs and blankets places closer to the rope line so they can also see the recreated battle or demonstration. If you select a sitting location, please remain seated as much as possible during the program so as to not block the view of others. Food and beverages are sold onsite. We also can recommend local restaurants at rue information booth. Loose something? Stop at our information booth to report it and see if it was turned in. find something? Please bring it to an information booth or ask one of our cart drivers to drop it off at lost and found. Dress for the weather and walking. Shade is limited and there is a good bit of walking to see the entire reenactment. Don’t forget your sunscreen and perhaps an umbrella. The show will go on regardless of weather. There is a lot to see and do. Regularly scheduled demonstrations provide a formal introduction to WWII history and the Normandy Invasion. Living historians in the camps also have a lot to share with you. Between tactical recreations and demonstrations, be sure to visit the Allied camp and Occupied France. Please ask permission before you touch. All of the items you see at D-Day Conneaut are privately owned. Most of our reenactors are happy to let you have a closer look at equipment or even handle it, but some of it is very rare, expensive, and/or fragile. Ask before you touch! This applies to vehicles as well. Take care in and around displays and vehicles, especially with small children. Speaking of our younger visitors, please pay close attention to your surroundings (parents too on behalf of your children). We have some large vehicles that have limited visibility, trip hazards and other potential hazards as you might find in any outdoor park. Make sure to visit our children’s area to stage your own D-Day invasion. Want to join us as a volunteer? Please stop at the information booth. Interested in becoming a reenactor? Stop and talk with the various groups – and visit vendors row for uniform and equipment essentials.
