VO Guangdong province of China is seeking to improve tourism cooperation with Laos INTRO: Guangdong province of China is seeking to improve tourism cooperation with Laos, referring to the already existing transport connectivity and relations between Laos and Guangdong. STORY: Potential cooperation in tourism was raised at the talks between the Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Prof. Dr Bosengkham Vongdara and Director General of Guangdong province’s Foreign Affairs Office Dr Fu Lang. Dr Fu and his delegation called on the minister at the ministry’s office yesterday. The Guandong side noted the existing direct flights between Guangdong province and Vientiane, as well as the Lao consulate which opened in the province recently. Dr Fu noted that they would be important facilities for further boosting travel and tourism among the peoples of Laos and Guangdong. He said the good relations between China and Laos has led to the opening of the Lao consulate in Guangdong. He reminded the minister of the number of Chinese people from his province travelling abroad, which has now reached 7 million every year. Dr Fu noted that while Laos is a landlocked country it is very important in Asean as it has an abundance of beautiful nature and maintains political stability, which he said makes it attractive to tourists from China. He also spoke about the international tourism meeting at the ministerial level which is held in Guangdong province on a biannual basis. Dr Fu wanted the minister and a Lao delegation to join the event. Meanwhile Dr Bosengkham reminded the guests of the number of Chinese tourists visiting Laos, which are now among the top arrivals from throughout the Asian region. He commented on efforts to facilitate tourism and noted that since direct flights and consulate were opened the number of Chinese visitors has increased. Dr Bosengkham said he hoped more Chinese from Guangdong and its nearby provinces will visit Laos in the years ahead. The minister also reminded the guests on the authorities’ initiative to install tourism information signs in Chinese language especially in the northern provinces. He added that there are Chinese speaking servants in many hotels and restaurants so that Chinese tourists will enjoy greater convenience during their stay in the country. Dr Bosengkham noted the Lao government’s attention in maintaining peace and stability as a critical fundament to facilitate tourism and economic development. The minister told the delegates about the increased number of Lao people visiting China, commenting that the increasing exchange of visits between people from both countries will enhance mutual understanding between the two neighbours. On the occasion, Dr Fu also commented on the good climate in Laos which he said is convenient for travelling by air and said that services at the restaurants where the delegation dined in Vientiane were in line with international standards.
