VOLLEYBALL World Cup Quest starts this evening: The Uganda Volleyball Cranes will this evening take to the court at the MTN sports arena in Lugogo in a do or die game against Burundi in the Federation of International Volleyball (FIVB) World Championship Zone V Sub Zonal qualifiers that kicks off at 05:00 pm with a game between regional giants Kenya facing off Tanzania. The home team needs only one win to get through to the next round and a win in the opening game is just what the team will be going for to cement a finish in the top three. In the last continental zone outing in Kigali Rwanda in 2011, the Volleyball Cranes failed to impress in the Zone Five All Africa Games qualifiers but this time round the team hopes to give its best to qualify for the next stage. Aporu George will play in the middle together with Otim Dickens.Aporu will be preferred to start in this position ahead of Phillip Wandawa and KAVC’s young lad Xavier Atama because the starting setter on the team (John Bosco Opendi) found it almost impossible to set for him balls in the outside positions. The other reason why he will be on that court is that he is a better net defender than the two, Wandawa and Atama. While the two are also equally effective on the offensive, their net defense still goes begging some times in the game.Aporu has effectively featured in this position in almost all his games at club level for the past two seasons. Uganda’s main weapon in this game will be net defense and back court defense and this explains why Nemostars’ Tom Paul Amou will be on that team together with the youngest player on the team,Emma Elanyu as the Libero.Others to complete the list of coach Ndawula’s troops are Dr.Loius Mubangizi and Nicholas Dheyongera. The Sub Zonal qualifiers will see the top three teams between Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and Burundi qualify for the next level slated for September. Probable starting six: John Bosco Opendi,Dikens Otim (captain), George Aporu (vice captain), Tom Paul Amou, Nicholas Dheyongera,Loius Mubangizi, and Libero Emma Elanyu. On the Bench: Smith Okumu, Jonathan Akuguzibwe, Philip Wandawa, Emma Kato, Xavier Atama. Head coach: Anthony Ndawula
