Ive been asked by many people what my thoughts on Will Gansa and his campaign are. To be honest, Im thankful; hes started a conversation about USG that has never before happened in my time on USG, one that is extremely necessary and has engaged an unprecedented number of students. This is my full, honest opinion: Will Gansa has a point. For those of you who support Will, I understand your frustrations with USG. Ive felt it myself. I understand your complaints that USG doesnt do anything. Ive heard them. I’ve thought them myself. Thats why Ive been emphatic on changing USG, entirely restructuring it, and refocusing it to projects that students really care about, including transparency about what USG does and dining policy (not too far from those waffle fries! In fact, I have gotten requests for guacamole and Nutella which I’ve seriously considered, and the Dining Policy committee which I chaired has also advocated for fresh fruit directly to Dining Services), which Ive worked on since freshman year. I agree with Wills criticisms. But USG is not a hopeless cause. I’ve spent the past two years on USG musing over and discussing with my peers about how to change its mission, structure and execution. I’ve thought long and hard about if I could actually feasibly improve USG, and I only, only ran for President and decided to stay in USG because I believed that I, together with the rest of USG and the whole community, could make a difference through this outlet. I didn’t run to resume pad, or for the attention or fame (I’m actually a very private person)—I ran because I saw that we could salvage and improve USG. Our University’s administration, with all its shortcomings, really does listen to us undergraduates, and USG really does have the ability to make change. CASE IN POINT: We have this Wednesday before Thanksgiving off because USG ADVOCATED FOR IT only a few years ago. I’ve felt through all my conversations with administrators and peers that change is possible. I hope you can trust that I have the experience and the critical eye to make the changes necessary. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends, and safe travels for those returning home!!
