VOTE for YVETTE MOFFATT (PUNKIN) “Let us put our minds together to see what we can build for our children”…Chief Sitting Bull… This Saturday is Election Day for our community…a day filled with hope for the future, the possibility of renewal, anxiety and real promise. The time leading up to that date is also filled with promise…or promises. I am not one to make promises, as having spent a couple of terms in office, I know how difficult it can become to make and keep promises in this kind of political arena. My name is Yvette Moffatt, or Punkin as many of you still call me, and I am seeking re-election this Saturday. As many of you already know, I was born and raised in Mississauga First Nation, the first born to Roy Jackpine and the late Doris Jackpine. I have been married for the last fourteen years, have two daughters aged 12 and 6, and we are committed to raising our daughters in this area and community. Having travelled to a number of different countries throughout the past decade, and within Canada, my husband and I cannot come up with a more suitable location to raise our family…this is our commitment. The opportunities for our young people as far as local education, sports, entertainment and a safe future are all here….is there opportunity for improvement?...there always is. I have used the term commitment a few times already, and I like that more than a promise…commitment holds more meaning to me…here is what I am committed to… • First and foremost I am committed to the future success of my family and raising my girls to be successful contributors to their future communities, wherever that may be. • I am committed to my work and the joy it brings me working with our young families, and my husband is committed to the success of his employer…we have no plans to leave the area. • I am committed to being an active community member by participating, volunteering and help co-ordinating events including the Aboriginal Days Celebration. • I am committed to being an active member of Council…and having my voice heard…even if my opinion differs from others. • I am committed to hearing from our membership and bringing concerns forward…either subtly or in a direct manner depending on circumstances. • I am committed to listening to all members of council and supporting decisions in a constructive manner as we move forward. • I am committed to steering the community towards economic opportunities and encouraging others to review and support opportunities that may present themselves. • I am committed to continuing to press the Government and our leadership to continue the hard work began by previous councils in moving the outstanding Land Claims forward. Finally, I am committed to encouraging a community environment where we challenge our young people to dream. As parents, my husband and I do not want our girls to live the same lives we are (not that there is anything wrong with our accomplishments), we want them to find their own success. This is what I want for our community…to foster an environment where our young people can dream of a positive future. When our young people leave, I want them to make friends and speak of their home community with pride. While I make no immediate promise to make the World a better place, you have my commitment to work for you and with you over the next three years. Miigwetch This Saturday…Dec 6, 2014 don’t forget to vote for Yvette Moffatt…or Punkin.
