Vacancies at Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) وظائف متنوعة في المبادرة المصرية للحقوق الشخصية Researcher on Detention and Torture Prevention The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights is hiring a full time Human Rights “Researcher on Detention and Torture prevention” to be part of the organization’s Criminal Justice Unit. (12 month contract with a possibility of extension) Application Deadline: 25 July 2014 Job Responsibilities: The selected researcher will carry out the following tasks: Monitor policy developments in relation to conditions of detention and detention monitoring. Monitor, investigate and analyze human rights violations taking place in the context of detention. Produce relevant press releases, research papers and policy briefs on the situation in Egypt’s prisons and other detention facilities. Map out and establish contacts with relevant stakeholders. Take part in EIPR’s local, regional and international networks on issues related to detention monitoring and torture prevention. Participate in designing strategies and undertaking campaigns advocating for respect for detainees’ rights and independent monitoring of places of detention, including campaigns calling for the ratification of the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture. Any other relevant tasks. Requirements: A degree in social sciences, law or other relevant disciplines. Masters degree preferred. Excellent research and writing skills in both Arabic and English; previous experience in research required. Experience in interviewing victims of human rights violations. Familiarity with the international human rights legal system. Willingness to visit places of detention if needed. Willingness and ability to travel within Egypt and abroad. Interpersonal skills, including strong organizational skills, capacity to build consensus between different actors and negotiation skills. The ability to function quickly and well under pressure, both independently and as a member of a team, and to juggle multiple tasks. Previous experience on the issue of detention conditions a plus. Salary Salary will be commensurate with experience, and within the range of salaries offered by Egyptian human rights NGOs.
