Vacancies, infra woes mar health services in Balangir district hospital Quality health service is a luxury at the District Headquarters Hospital in Balangir due to acute staff shortage and infrastructural problems. While 250 to 270 patients visit DHH every day, it is functioning at the mercy of nurses, pathologists and junior doctors. The posts of radiologists, anaesthetists, senior surgery specialist, senior orthopaedics, blood bank officer, joint director (rank I), pediatric and four nurses are lying vacant for last several years. A pathologist is doing the work of the blood bank officer. Apart from vacancies, equipment worth at least Rs 20 lakh in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital is not functioning. As a result, serious patients requiring intensive care are sent to VSS Medical College and Hospital in Burla. Besides, the hospital faces frequent power-cuts. As there is a shortage of staff quarters, the nurses are residing in the houses meant for other staff. During her recent visit to the hospital, National Rural Health Mission Director Roopa Mishra said the hospital has almost failed in waste management and maintenance of the drainage system. Moreover, the hospital’s main building continues to function from the administrative building. The hospital has 184 beds but far more indoor patients are admitted to the hospital every day. Besides catering to the patients of Balangir and periphery, the DHH acts as a referral hospital for patients from Kalahandi, Sonepur, Boudh, Bargarh and Nuapara districts. The hospital also receives a large number of malaria patients. Lack of adequate security arrangements allows miscreants to create problem, especially during the night. Balangir CDMO Dr Bikrant Kumar Kindo said the staff nurses’ shortage will be solved as fresh appointments will be made soon. “We have written to the Government to fill up other vacancies. We are taking utmost care to provide better services to the people,” added Kindo.
