Vale to complete Malawi’s rail project in 2014 Brazilian international company—Vale Logistics Limited constructors of the Malawi – Mozambique railway line that goes through Mwanza, Neno, Balaka and Nsanje, has expressed confidence that construction works on the project would be completed by the end of 2014. This was learned during a visit to Vale’s coal mining site in Tete, Mozambique by Malawian journalists who are touring various economic projects in Mozambique under the sponsorship of National Bank of Malawi. Vale’s Planning and Control General Manager Valteir Lacerda told the journalists that the rail project is on track and will be completed within the planned time. He said the company is trying to speed up the works to meet the deadline. “During the rainy season, we will focus on the rails and slippers works. Already, so much work has been done including construction of bridges in Balaka and we are optimistic that by 2014, construction work will be through,” said Lacerda. He disclosed that the construction works had created job opportunities for over 4,000 Malawians. Meanwhile, Vale’s Mines General Manager Eufrasio Manuel said the company would double coal production at Moatize to 22 million tons a year by 2018. He said the company also has plans to double its storage capacity. “By 2015, the plant will be running on full capacity and we expect that by 2018, we will be able to double our production,” said Manuel. The mine, said Manuel, has 1.5 billion tons of coal reserves and that in future, the company plans to venture into electricity production with a planned plant to generate 1,000 megawatts of power. “We will sale the power to the [Mozambican] electricity company for domestic use purposes,” he said.
