Valencia opts for an international break Antonio Valencia missed Ecuadors 4-0 win over Bolivia but interim coach Sixto Vizuete has quashed speculation that the Manchester United wing-back could consider retiring from international football. Vizuete addressed the situation before his team recorded an emphatic victory in Miami with another fixture still to come against Brazil in midweek. I have spoken several times to him [Valencia] and he has not told me that, replied Vizuete, when asked if Valencia would stop playing for his country. I do not think he will make that decision because he is a man who the selection [international side] wants and needs. He must prepare to represent the country. Vizuete went on to explain Valencia asked not to meet up for the international matches because he was still recovering from the physical and mental exertions of the World Cup and the early part of the Premier League season. It was felt a short break would enable the 29-year-old to get back to 100 per cent fitness and the request was accepted. However, the United man, who often plays in central midfield for Ecuador, could step down as captain after taking on the responsibility a year ago for a World Cup qualifier against Colombia. Vizuete admitted he was looking at other options for the role.
