Vandaag gaan de research seminars van Archeologie weer van start. De eerste lezing zal zijn van William Van Andringa (Université de Lille III) en vindt plaats in lokaal 14A-33 (hoofdgebouw van de VU) om 15.30. De titel is: ‘110 m2 of funerary space, 16.000 artifacts and 100.000 fragments of human bone. From fieldwork to a synthesis on funerary practices in Roman Pompeii’ Lees verder voor een korte abstract van de lezing: The world of the dead, from an archaeological point of view, is as rich and varied as the world of the living. During the excavation of a funeral quarter of the necropolis of Porta Nocera at Pompeii, we collected 16.000 artifacts and 100.000 fragments of human bones expressing the everyday funerary practices and conducts at the site. The excellent state of preservation of the archaeological remains offers a perfect opportunity to examine all the information available about the history of the cemetery and its occupants (some of whom are well known through epigraphy), the arrangement of the tombs, and the organization of sepulchral space (e.g. architecture, inscriptions, funerary artifacts). A meticulous excavation allowed a quite precise reconstruction of the various funerary activities on the basis of the material found both on the surface levels and in the fill of the graves: human bones of course – we are talking about dead – but also animal bones, ceramics, oil lamps, glass, coins, metal, plant remains, charcoal, even pollen and insects. From the very beginning we developed an analytical survey method designed to classify remains that were likely to inform us about the funerary activities and experiences within the enclosures from the Augustan to the Flavian era.
