Vanilla grown in the spice islands of Zanzibar off the coast of Tanzania. These pods are the source of the famous spice also called vanilla. Currently most vanilla is from artificial flavoring but the expensive stuff comedy from real vanilla pods. These pods actually belong to a species of orchid. The tube on the vanilla flower is so long that the flowers need help pollenating, so the must be hand pollinated. The people that worked at the farm manually use a part of a palm frond to ensure that all the flowers turn into the valuable pods, and this is part of the reason why real vanilla pods are so expensive today.
