Ventura County Star Newspaper letters to Editor Dan Crotty, Ventura Desalination not feasible Having served on a Navy destroyer, I am familiar with desalination as we were dependent upon it for everything related to shipboard life. The power for desalination came from oil-burning steam boilers. No boiler today in California can use oil (or coal) to make steam. Reverse osmosis needs power, lots of it. Santa Barbara had such a plant, but Lake Cachuma finally got its rainfall and the plant was shut down. There is no prospect that an electricity-generating plant will ever be built again on California’s coast. Due to Environmental Protection Agency regulations, there is little chance of a plant being built inland. Even if one could be built, it would have to use fresh water in its cooling towers. Nonatmospheric polluting nuclear power again is not an option for providing much- needed electricity. Environmentalists wield great power, but none of it provides jobs, lights or a new freshwater supply. How do we conserve our way out of a diminishing supply of water and electricity?
