Verdenergia started a Adopt a tree program. (and ofcourse you are welcome to plant the tree yourself in Lanas,Puriscal, Costa Rica.) Please, if you can, donate 25 euro. Our employees/investors will take care of the trees the next 3-4 years. After that, a tree becomes way less labour intensive. (see diagram general cost of a tree.) The goals of this project will be reforestation and sustainable tree farming. In our reforestation initiative we will demonstrate the benefits of reforesting on degraded cow pasture; the property as it exists now has been largely deforested. After cutting the natural forests, followed by intensive agriculture and animal farming the land loses its nutrients and has no protection from sun and rain. Erosion becomes an issue, Verdenergia bought a piece of land right above our property. The property was up for sale and a palmoil company wanted to buy this. So to prevent monoculture palm fields above us, on which they spray pesticides that would poison our drinking water, we bought the land. Thanks to investors, who bought shares we were able to pull this off in a few months. (who needs corrupt banks for mortgages anyway.) On this property there will be about 10.000 trees planted (and maybe more). The soil has bin damaged greatly by cows. Trees will help to stop erosion by holding the soil in place with their roots. Little by little, organic particles will get trapped behind the roots and start forming fertile topsoil. It also will function as a wildlife corridor because trees also attract wildlife. The list of trees was shown in the previous newsletter. Almost all trees were planted; there might be about 200 left. We will soon fence off a new part to plant those trees as well. The Melina trees that we had in the nursery were planted, but we need to grow a lot more Melina and Teak to intercrop with the local species. We did not have much luck with the germination of the Teak seeds. We are going to have those ready for planting in April. We are actually running ahead with the planting! The first planting was planned for April 2015, but the seeds which were planted in bags had grown so fast, that they needed to be planted. Planting trees here is very hard work! There has only been a skeleton crew here on the farm for the last couple of months. So it is very hard to keep up with all the work on the farm and Shangri-Lanas. Thanks Carlos, Eduardo, Rolando and Ned for all the hard work you guys are doing! And thanks to our investors for making this world a better place! Are you interested in adopting a tree or have any questions? please e-mail me at [email protected] (you can write me in english, dutch or spanish.)
