Veritably, nigh every day, I awake and hear about another Black lad or man beaten, or shot dead, by a law enforcement officer or, as in the still Stygian-salient and gnash-gnawing case of George Zimmerman (who racially profiled, stalked, and with credibly presumed impunity, shot dead 17-year-old, unarmed Trayvon Martin), some manifestly racist (at least racially invidious) person who fancied himself the equivalent of a law enforcement officer. Republican and Democratic politicians alike fetishize President Ronald Reagans iconic, perfunctorily platitudinous pablum: Its morning in America. Hmn. . . Morning in America rings to me as an ironic, nigh homophonic twin separated, by divergent empirical experiences and capacities for extrapolative-empathy, from its sibling, Mourning in America. I dont know about you, good reader, but for me, as it has ever been and remains -- morning, noon, and night -- for a myriad many people of color, particularly those parents whose children have been killed: Its *mourning* in America. . . . O, yes, I say it plain, America never was America to me, And yet I swear this oath-- America will be! -from LET AMERICA BE AMERICA AGAIN by Langston Hughes #MourningInAmerica #WelcomeAfter __________________ #Nerdland
