Very important: this is from my friend Ron Reisman who is a scientist at NASA : the amount of energy it takes to propel any object in an upward direction will be just about precisely the same amount of energy that object has when it returns to its point of origin. In other words, yes those bullets are extremely deadly when they return to the ground. Staying indoors is not necessarily enough protection, since an AK-47 round should easily be able to penetrate several floors and ceilings and walls. The son of a colleague of mine from NASA was shot by a 44 caliber handgun. He was lying on his couch when it happened. Some idiot had fired the handgun into the air as a celebration for sports event – and this was in Nashville Tennessee... thank you Ron!
