Via Mike Hancock ALL DOGS ARE INDIVIDUALS An interesting piece and a good quick read. Well researched and easy to comprehend. What stands out here is the fact that 0.25% of the canine genome is concerned with outward appearance, and the rest is totally unseen and governs every other trait in the dog. This is key – since pedigree breeders concern themselves ONLY with what they can see (breed conformation). Put plainly, they are tinkering with 0.25% of the gene set and messing up 99.75% of the balance of the genome that they know nothing about in the process. And of course the harm inbreeding causes, with around 25% of 20 million “purebred” dogs in the USA with serious genetic problems. Hybrid vigour is well established as a scientific fact, yet pedigree breeders incorrectly insist they are breeding superior animals in a closed gene pool. And they use their proliferation of animals in their kennels/catteries as a ploy to claim they are breeding “genetic diversity” – sometimes in breeds with as few as 5 foundation animals. How is this possible? And pedigree breeders claim they are “bettering the breed”? How can such vanity be substantiated? Their arrogance is matched only by their ignorance of genetics. andfostermakesfive/2013/10/29/which-dogs-are-best-with-children/
