(Via National Hurricane Center) NOAAs G-IV aircraft, based at MacDill AFB in Tampa, Fla., has been dispatched to Hawaii in advance of Hurricane Iselle. It will take off from Honolulu at 7:30 a.m. HST (1:30 p.m EDT) today, flying high around the storm and releasing more than two dozen dropsondes to sample the atmosphere of the pressure, temperature, humidity, and GPS Doppler frequency shifts (used to compute the horizontal and vertical wind components). The data is transmitted to the National Centers for Environmental Prediction and the National Hurricane Center for inclusion into the global and hurricane model runs. The data is also sent to the hurricane forecaster, providing real-time observations depicting the synoptic patterns surrounding the hurricane. The USAF Reserve Hurricane Hunters, based at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi, have also been dispatched to Hawaii, and will begin flying missions into Iselle tonight.
