Vicky and Beki asked about Chinook crosses. The COA CrossBreeding - TopicsExpress

Vicky and Beki asked about Chinook crosses. The COA CrossBreeding program is active, but the last actual outcross was in early 90s. Those lines are now pretty much incorporated as purebred after generations of meeting the program guidelines, with just one fourth generation litter born in 2013 that is eligible for UKC and AKC registration now, and a third generation litter born this January that is UKC eligible in 2016 IF the puppies pass health tests. That last litter (my Nashira and her sibs) is not eligible for AKC registration prior to the AKC stud book closing as is currently planned in 2017. The Chinook Pedigree Project (CPP) is actively working with the Institute of Canine Biology (ICB) and several population geneticists and conservation biologists evaluating the diversity in the current Chinook population. The reports back from Dr. Carol Beuchat, Dr. Katariina Maaki, Dr. Pieter Oliehoeck, and Dr. Gregoire Leroy all concur that the population is not sustainable in the long term with its current level of inbreeding. A report should be available shortly from ICB that I will cross-publish here. Based on the CPP results, the COA CrossBreeding program will be seeking assistance in evaluating its current policies and understanding what recommendations are from the scientists about the best way forward. The UKC is very supportive of this as well. At this time, only Chinooks from the outcrosses in the late 80s/early 90s that have already passed the fourth generation are eligible, along with their other purebred brethren for AKC registration. When the AKC studbook closes in 2017, only dogs descending from those already AKC registered will be eligible for the AKC. Its unclear what portion of the purebred population this is -- my guess would be a lot less than 100%. The UKC continues to offer a Single Dog Registration program as well as its support for the Cross Program, which will mean eligible dogs can be registered at any time.
