Vid: Reclaim Harvey Milk Plaza: Equal Access for All By Todd Swindell and Michael Petrelis Last weeks controversy about which segment of the San Francisco public had access to the soccer field at Mission Playground, which is public property, reminded us of our almost four-year effort to reclaim all of Harvey Milk Plaza. This important piece of LGBT space at Castro and Market Streets contains a flagpole and enormous rainbow flag, and theyre controlled by the private Castro Merchants organization. Since we launched our effort focusing attention on equal access for all to the flagpole, neither the incumbent District Supervisor nor the Castro Merchants have held a single meeting about allowing occasional use of the flagpole by LGBT activists and taxpayers. Harvey Milk Plaza and the flagpole are administered by the City Administrator and Department of Public Works, both of whom are fine with the status quo. #VotePetrelis shot a video this week while campaigning at Harvey Milk Plaza and we fully believe Harvey Milk would agree with us, that the entire plaza including the rainbow flagpole belong to the public and community control of this public space is an important goal.
